Rebekah on Rails

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

A few years ago, Mark started telling me about Ruby on Rails and I thought it sounded like the dumbest thing on earth.  I asked, “Why would I want a framework to do my job for me?”  Then I got a job in the real world.  Ya know, that world where we all have way too much to do in the time were given?  I realized, “Duh!  I want it to do my job because I don’t have time to do everything my job requires.”  It all started to make sense.  I’m now happily coding in Rails and loving it.  I’m using ajax here and there.  I switched from Eclipse to Textmate (which I can post more about separately if anyone wants).  If you’re doing web apps, feeling bogged down by change requests, and want to explore something new…OR you’re new to web apps and want to learn something cool, you should definitely check out RoR.

Name My Web App

So, I’ve been working on a project for my mom recently (by working I mean procrastinating) and I’m starting to think it needs a name. I won’t go into a lot of the details of the project because they’re specific to my mom’s setup, but the general idea is to create a database of all of her music compositions. It’ll probably just be a link from her website and nobody will ever have to think about the fact that it is actually database driven.

Now, I have thought about the fact that there are possibilities of opening this up more broadly. For example, say my texan friend wanted to have a database of all his compositions. It might be a touch different for him, but he would probably rather do less work by taking my code (with all references to my mom specific stuff of course removed). This assumes that he is willing to lower himself to using something I wrote. He does have years of experience on me.

Anywho, if any of this is going to happen it needs a name. Every good app needs a name. So what should I name this one?
